By Alex Caruso on May 27, 2022
Juneteenth (official name: Juneteenth National Independence Day, also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Black Independence Day) is the anniversary of the end of slavery for African-Americans in the United States, celebrated on June 19 every year. Originating for the first time from the city of Galveston, Texas, this commemoration movement began to spread across the United States in 1865.
Historically, around the beginning of the 17th century, European colonists began to migrate to a new colony in the Americas (today the United States) to live. To explore new lands, they forced millions of African people to follow as slaves to serve in these migrations. By 1865, when colonialism was abolished after the American Civil War (1861-1865), along with the passage of the 13th Amendment by the current government, African slaves began to be freed. from being used as a tool of work. To mark the event, people take June 19 every year to celebrate liberation.
